Chestnuthill seniors

Monroe County Seniors meet at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, in the church’s Assembly Hall, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Lunch can be bought there, and activities include card games, social time and bingo.

Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, welcomes the group Take Off Pounds Sensibly. TOPS meets at two times each Wednesday, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will hold its next West End Missions dinner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Knights to meet

The Knights of Columbus will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville.

Old-Tyme meeting

There will be a membership meeting of the Pocono Old-Tyme Farm Equipment Association at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the museum at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

Garden opening

The Garden of Giving will open Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This month, the garden will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (Note: It will close in the event of rain).

Helpers are still needed to assist with IT, with phone calls and, most importantly, someone who will apply for grants. All are year-round office jobs.

Also, someone is still needed to mow weekly and do the weed-whacking.

Meet the artist

This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., folks will have the opportunity to meet artist Jeff Koopman at the Art Gallery at Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center. His show, “Waterways and Byways,” will feature nature-oriented oil paintings with an emphasis on waterways.

Koopman’s work will be on display for the month of April in the gallery, which is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It also will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 11 and April 18.

Nature walk

Members and friends of Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, are taking a nature walk to get into shape — physically, mentally and spiritually — on Saturday at Eagles Nest Park in Slatington. It is a carpool event, so folks should meet at the church at 1 p.m. To verify that meeting time or for more information, call Pastor Deborah Scheffey at 610-681-5191.

Earth Day Festival

The first-ever Earth Day Festival will take place at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert from April 17-19.

The rain-or-shine, family-friendly event will feature live music, DJs, food trucks and a variety of vendors and crafters. There will also be a basket raffle and a marching band battle. The festival, which will use both indoor and outdoor spaces, will tentatively conclude with a fireworks display.

Hours are 5-10 p.m. April 17; 2-10 p.m. April 18; and noon-7 p.m. April 19. Those over 11 must pay a charge, but ages 10 and under will be admitted for free.

Anyone who brings a donation for the A.W.S.O.M. Animal Shelter or the Center for Animal Health & Welfare (Project Paw) will receive $1 off admission.

‘She Nailed It’

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity has announced the return of the annual fundraiser “She Nailed It.” It is taking place at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort from noon to 4 p.m. May 3.

Teams of four compete for bronze, silver and gold hammer prizes in the competition. The day also includes tricky tray prizes.

A practice session will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the organization’s ReStore in East Stroudsburg.

Turkey takeout

Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is offering turkey takeout dinners from 4-5:30 p.m. May 2. The platters include turkey with gravy, filling, carrots, applesauce, roll and choice of cake.

Also being accepted are orders for pints or quarts of celery seed dressing.

Voter sign-up

From state Rep. Jack Rader comes the reminder: Pennsylvanians who are not already registered to vote but wish to participate in the May 19 primary election should be sure to register no later than May 4.

‘Bog Birding’

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is holding “Bog Birding” programs on May 6 and May 13 from 7-9 a.m. each day at the Tannersville Cranberry Bog.

People are invited to learn the basics of birding while discovering the unique and fascinating bird species that visit this rare habitat.

Limited binoculars available upon request.

There is a cost for participating. Preregistration and payment is required.
