Baer pool sets out-of-county pass

In an attempt to generate more revenue, Lehighton will open its pool up this season to Tamaqua and Slatington residents.

On a 5-0 measure, borough council on Monday set the out of county day pass sales for Baer Memorial Swimming Pool.

The cost for Tamaqua and Slatington zip code residents to attend Baer Memorial Swimming Pool will be $15 for adults, and $10 for children.

The Tamaqua pool will be closed for the season while upgrades are completed.

A start date for the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool project at Bungalow Park had yet to be set.

Most of the work will be completed by mid-October. Final completion is expected in April of 2027.

Tom Evans, Lehighton Borough recreation director, noted that the maximum capacity at Baer Memorial Swimming Pool is 450.

“(Season pass) members are always first,” Evans said.

In a related matter, council approved a list of lifeguards for the 2026 season, per the recommendation of Evans.

Council members Grant Hunsicker and Joe Flickinger were absent.

After the meeting, Evans noted that both Tamaqua and Slatington are neighboring municipalities.

He noted that the Tamaqua pool will be closed, and added they get a lot of people from Slatington trying to come to Baer Memorial.

Evans said not only will this open up Baer Memorial for more people to see the facility, but that the decision is expected to increase income as well.

He added he believes Baer Memorial will benefit by opening up the pool to Tamaqua and Slatington residents, and that it’s not going to hurt the pool’s memberships at all.

In June, borough council on a 5-0 vote agreed to raise the daily admission to Baer Memorial Swimming Pool from $10 to $12 for adults, and $7 to $8 for children.

That decision was made to be more comparable to area pools.

Beginning this year, the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association will resume full operational responsibilities for the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool.

Last year marked the final year that the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority managed and operated the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool.
