Carbon approves salary changes
Carbon County officials approved several salary actions in various departments on Thursday; however, one official felt that one action went against previous decisions.
On Thursday, the county salary board acted on several motions unanimously, however the motion to change the rate of a second deputy in the county treasurer’s office from $17.29 per hour to $19.56 per hour passed in a 4-1 vote, with county controller Kayla Herman voting against the measure. Commissioner Wayne Nothstein voted in favor of the motion with the comment that other positions like this need to be adjusted accordingly.
When asked why she voted against the increase, she said it was because this goes against a previous action for her department.
“In the past, when an employee moves from one department to another, they have to start from the beginning of the scale,” Herman said. “It happened with an employee in my office. I don’t feel it’s fair for an employee to move from one department to another at the same rate when another employee had to take a pay cut.”
Other salary moves the board approved include:
• Court computer information: Change the rate of one IT specialist from $19.05 per hour to $18.13 per hour, effective April 2. This resets the position after the employee left.
• Public defender: Establish the position of one temporary summer law clerk (grant funded) at $17.26 per hour, effective April 2.
• Animal shelter: Change the rate of one part-time K-9 officer from $13.87 per hour to $13.53 per hour, effective April 2. This resets the position to the starting rate.
• Election department: Change the rate of one assistant director from $20.24 per hour to $19.27 per hour, effective April 2. This resets the position after the employee left.
• Parks: Change the rates of two lifeguard positions from $14.92 per hour and $14.56 per hour to $14.20 per hour. Both positions were reset to the starting rate.
