Historical society

The Nesquehoning Historical Society has announced the start of a series of local history presentations as part of the town’s America250 Celebration.

The first presentation is “The History of Nesquehoning Village, Part I.”

The presentation takes place at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Doors open an hour before the presentation.

Historian Vince Hydro’s presentation will cover many facets of the town’s early history, including the meaning of the name, “Nesquehoning”; the early settlers in the valley; the discovery of anthracite coal along Room Run; and a brief history of the town’s coal mining industry.

The event will take place at the society’s museum, 157 W. Railroad St.

This event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the historical society are always welcome.
