Lehighton police conduct program with BHA
Students at Behavioral Health Associates, Willow Academy, learned about the challenges of Cyber Bullying, along with important tips on drug awareness.
The Lehighton Borough Police Department on Monday provided a Community Service Outreach Program for students at Behavioral Health Associates, Willow Academy.
This marked the second year for the program, as police met with between 25-30 students ranging from middle school to high school, according to borough police Chief Troy Abelovsky.
Detective Matt Arner discussed with students the challenges of Cyber Bullying, and some dangers facing juveniles on the Internet, such as online predators who use the following: gaming platforms, social media and messaging apps to target, groom and exploit vulnerable juveniles, for sexual or financial purposes.
Abelovsky said great questions and discussion were generated through the presentation.
Corporal Bruce Broyles then discussed drug awareness, and how alcohol and prescription or illegal narcotics can affect the human body.
Broyles explained some of the indicators officers look for in an impaired person, and the field tests used to detect the indicators.
Some students volunteered to take part in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests to further visualize these tests, Abelovsky said.
“The Lehighton Borough Police Department appreciates the opportunity to meet with BHA Students, and we hope the information provided helps safeguard the students in making good decisions in their daily activities,” Abelovsky said.
