The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on Wednesday at about 11:23 a.m.
Authorities said troopers from the Belfast barracks were dispatched to the 2400 block of Applebutter Road, Lower Saucon Township, to assist the Lower Saucon Township Police Department with a welfare check on a 37-year-old man who had discharged his firearm. They said a township officer returned fire, but no one was injured.
Police said a PSP Special Emergency Response Team that arrived on scene established a perimeter around the residence, after which time a member of the SERT engaged the armed male and shot him outside the residence. The man was transported by ambulance to Saint Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said there were no injuries to law enforcement or any other individuals.
Applebutter Road was closed at Ringhoffer Road and Sherryhill Road.
The Troop M Major Case Team is the lead in this investigation. Assisting are representatives of the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office, Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Lower Saucon Township Police Department, Upper Saucon Township Police Department, Hellertown Borough Police Department, Lehigh County Emergency Response Team, Northampton County Sheriffs Department, Troop M Forensic Service Unit and Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit.
