Mary Wassil Rapach celebrated her 110th birthday on Wednesday at the Greenwood Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hometown, where she is a guest.
Born on March 25, 1916, in the village of Harwood Mines near Hazleton, she is the daughter of the late Michael and Katherine Wassil.
Her father died when she was 2 years old, a casualty of the Spanish flu pandemic.
After attending school, she worked at local garment factors.
She recalled heading to the woods with her seven siblings to pluck wild blueberries.
“We would sell them,” Rapach remembered.
She also reminisced about making paska bread and horseradish.
Mary grew the horseradish in her garden where she enjoyed tending to vegetables and flowers. She also had a beautiful tulip garden.
