Registration open to participate in litter pickup April 25

The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau is once again inviting volunteers to participate in its region-wide litter pickup day, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 25 (regardless of the weather conditions).

The Pick Up the Poconos Spring Cleanup is just one component of the PMVB’s “Pick Up the Poconos” campaign, which has resulted in 54,000 bags of trash being picked up.

Individuals and groups interested in participating can fill out the Volunteer form or Group Sign-Up form located at PickUpthePoconos.com. The deadline to sign up is by 5 p.m. on April 17.

There are more than 20 locations across Wayne, Pike, Monroe and Carbon counties where volunteers can choose to participate. Additionally, private cleanups organized by community groups, businesses and Pocono resorts also are part of this initiative. On the day of the cleanup, volunteers will receive supply kits containing trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and other necessary supplies.

The Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority plays a large role in coordinating the cleanup, distributing supplies, and properly disposing of the collected litter.

“Pocono Mountains residents are passionate about maintaining clean and green communities,” said Chris Barrett, president/CEO, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau. “We’re so grateful to all the volunteers who’ve dedicated their time to Pick Up the Poconos. Their hard work helps make the Pocono Mountains a fantastic place to live, learn, work, and have fun.”

The Pick Up the Poconos campaign also includes Pocono 3C, an innovative program involving multiple key partners that gives a hand up to individuals who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, by employing them to clean litter from Monroe County roadways.

The PMVB also contracts with Adopt-AHighway Litter Removal Service of America Inc. to clean major highways and entrance/exit ramps throughout the year.
