Dorothy O’Hara, a senior at Jim Thorpe Area High School, was honored by Valiant Post 26, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jim Thorpe, for having won the post’s annual Voice of Democracy contest.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zipp, Star Route, Jim Thorpe, she also claimed top honors in the District 20 VFW competition staged in Easton.

During a brief ceremony held at the post home, O’Hara was lauded as the first Jim Thorpe student to win the district competition. She was presented a wall plaque, medal and $25 award by George Smith, post commander.

Accompanying her was her oratory coach, Ellen Sawkiw, a member of the high school faculty.
