Rabbit Run club seeks Tamaqua help
Members of the Rabbit Run Fish and Game Association are looking for some help.
With dwindling membership, the volunteers asked to meet with Tamaqua Borough Council.
“The association respectfully requests that the borough’s Recreation Committee meet with our group to discuss the future of Rabbit Run and explore possible guidance or assistance,” association members Cody Houser and George Weaver wrote in a letter to council.
The two noted that the number of volunteers has dropped, with only about 10 to 15 to care for the borough-owned reservoir and surrounding land in the New England Valley of Walker Township.
The group also manages an on-site trout hatchery.
“Maintaining the property has become increasingly difficult and we may require additional guidance or expertise,” said the letter, which was read at Tuesday’s council meeting.
Houser and Weaver said the goal is to preserve Rabbit Run as a “meaningful” outdoor space for the community — particularly for young anglers. Each year, volunteers hold a fishing derby for kids.
“We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Recreation Committee to discuss possible options, advice or partnerships that could help sustain Rabbit Run for future generations,” according to the letter.
Councilwoman Kathy Kunkel motioned to refer the matter to the Recreation Committee.
The 4.94-acre Rabbit Run reservoir dates back to the 1850s and was Tamaqua’s first drinking water supply. Schuylkill County property records note that the property is 107.8 acres.
