Local Roundup: Results from March 19
Three area softball teams had successful season openers on Thursday.
Marian and Pleasant Valley both pulled away for victories, while Tamaqua rallied from a deficit to earn its win.
The Bears also gained wins in both tennis and girls lacrosse.
SOFTBALL
Marian-Executive Education
Marian stormed out to an 8-0 first-inning lead, and the Fillies rolled to a 17-2 shortened, non-league victory over Executive Education in the season opener for both clubs.
Malina Letcher drove in four runs and had three hits, and Deanna Pugh added a pair of hits and RBIs for the Fillies.
Marian starter Kayla Birrer struck out seven and allowed just two hits over four innings.

Pleasant Valley-PM East
Rylan Green drove in four runs with two hits, and Emma George added a pair of hits to lead Pleasant Valley to an 11-6 EPC victory over Pocono Mountain East.
Bella Altemose added a solo homer for the Bears.
Rylee Green struck out three and allowed two hits and three runs over the first two innings, while Maddie Abbatiello struck out five and allowed four runs and three hits over the final five innings.

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven
Tamaqua rallied in the seventh inning to pull out an 8-7 non-league win over host Schuylkill Haven.
The Blue Raiders trailed 7-4 going into their final at-bat but knotted the score when Paige Bumbulsky blasted a three-run homer, one of her three hits on the afternoon.
Later in the frame, an error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Naomi Knitter then tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. Knitter struck out four and allowed two runs and two hits over two and a third innings. Peyton Faust started in the circle for Tamaqua and fanned seven. Faust also collected two hits at the plate.

PM East-Pleasant Valley
Pocono Mountain East broke a tie game with four runs in the eighth inning to gain a 6-2 EPC victory over host Pleasant Valley.
The Bears trailed 2-0, but plated a pair of runs in the fifth to knot the score. A throwing error allowed courtesy runner Owen Walters to score the first run, and Mason Goff — who had singled — raced in with the tying tally.
Goff reached base three times for PV with his hit and two walks, and also stole two bases.
The Cardinals’ Lucas Rarick came up with the key hit in the eighth, delivering a two-run double.

TRACK & FIELD
Jim Thorpe-Lehighton
Jim Thorpe and Lehighton split their opening Colonial League meet.
The Olympian boys posted a 87-63 win, while the Indian girls earned a 92-54 victory.
Lehighton’s Elijah Pagotto and Lilyana Shapiro both captured three first-place finishes. Shapiro sprinted her way to top honors in the 100, 200 and 400, while Pagotto took the 800, 1600 3200s.
The Indians also received a pair of firsts from Owen Eckhart (long jump, triple jump), Bodie Hawk (shot put, discus), Lillian Klotz (100H, 300H), Adelenne Yenser (long jump, triple jump) and Hallie Miller (shot put, discus).
Pacing Thorpe were Josh Louk and Spencer Gothard, who each gained multiple firsts. Louk won the 100 and 200, while Gothard bettered the field in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury
Northern Lehigh split its Colonial League opener against Salisbury on Wednesday, with the Bulldogs earning an 82-64 victory in the girls meet, while the Falcons posted an 80-67 win on the boys side.
Emma Heil led the way for the Northern Lehigh girls, sweeping the distance events with wins in the 1600 and 3200. Teammate Natalie Moffitt also added a pair of first-place finishes, taking the 200 and 400.
McKenna Kirk also had a strong day in the field, winning both the shot put and discus, while Evelina Mayak (100 hurdles) and Malia Hyman (pole vault) each added victories.
On the boys side, Zaid Salih was a double winner for the Bulldogs, capturing both the 800 and 1600. Caden Stevens (110 hurdles) and Cayden Anglin (300 hurdles) each earned individual wins, while the Bulldogs showed strength in the field.
Nathaniel Kuhns (discus), William Slattery (javelin), Kellen Bauer (high jump) and Carter Thomas (pole vault) all secured first-place finishes for Northern Lehigh.

Northwestern freshman Cali Colistra recorded four goals, but the Tigers fell short in a 12-8 loss to undefeated Nazareth.
Liv Fagan, Ella Collins, Mandy Breidinger and Madelyn Lagowy all had goals for the Tigers.
Fagan broke the school record for most career draw controls, which was previously set by Olivia Costa. Fagan now holds the school record of 191 draw controls.
