Tamaqua woman breaks into home, grabs guns
A Tamaqua woman who broke into a home, retrieved guns and barricaded herself inside a bedroom Saturday night was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison on $100,000 cash bail.
The incident involving Alysha Hartshorn, 39, led to a four-hour standoff with law enforcement personnel.
According to state police, Tamaqua police were called to 501 Washington St. at 11:20 p.m. for a disturbance. Police spoke to the resident, who said that he and a friend were inside when they heard the basement door forced open. The friend said he saw the man’s wife, Hartshorn, kick her way through the door and then obtain two rifles.
The man told police that Hartshorn took the rifles and a box of ammunition to an upstairs bedroom. At that point, police said the men fled the home.
Tamaqua police asked Hartshorn to leave the home but she refused. Police said she barricaded herself in a bedroom near the front of the home.
Police closed Washington, Railroad, Pine, Rose and Elm streets and requested assistance from state police. State police troopers arrived and ordered Hartshorn to leave but she refused.
According to reports from the scene, members of the state police SERT team penetrated a second-floor window and released a drone inside the residence.
The standoff ended peacefully after four hours and Hartshorn was taken into custody.
She was arraigned Sunday morning before Magisterial District Judge Christian Lengel on charges of criminal trespass-break into structure; intimidate witness/victim; and simple assault.
Through an investigation, police learned that a recent criminal case forbids Hartshorn from having contact with her husband and bans her from the home.
On Feb. 22, Tamaqua police charged Hartshorn with simple assault and harassment after she threw an ashtray at her husband’s face.
She was charged with simple assault and harassment in early January after her 6-year-old son said Hartshorn stuck her fingers in his mouth and dragged him up a staircase. Police said the boy’s mouth was bleeding. A daughter said Hartshorn hit her in the face with a shoe and pulled her hair, and another daughter said Hartshorn pulled her hair and struck her with a vape.
Hartshorn admitted to the abuse, police said.
