Lacrosse Preview: Bears look to continue success

The Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse team will look to continue its dominance again this season.

The Bears, however, will have to do so having lost 10 seniors — including the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Player of the Year Devon Bush — and their longtime coach Toni Bush.

PV does return Division 1 prospect Rylee Rath, and will hope others step up to help the program remain an EPC and District 11 power.

Below are preview capsules for the area lacrosse teams:

NORTHWESTERN GIRLS

Head coach: Pam Colistra - 2nd season

Last year’s record: 8-11

Key players lost: Olivia Costa, Olivia Spatz, Cara Thomas, Sydney Wright

Returning starters/letterwinners: Maddie Breidinger, Olivia Greenawalt, Haley Kerschner, Gracie Scheffler, Mykaela Yanders

Others to watch: Ella Collins, Gia Di Carlo, Olivia Fagan, Lauren Feinour, Ella Filipovits, Alex Rodriguez, Ashley Yacynych

Strengths: Ashley Yacynych had a successful first season in goal for Northwestern and is back for her junior season for the Lady Tigers. She also has an experienced defense in front of her to work with, which gives Northwestern a strong defensive presence on the field. Both Kerschner and Scheffler are reliable defensively and provide solid leadership. Another strength is that there is consistency in coaching with Pam Colistra going into her second season. The players who are seniors this season had a different coach in each of their first three seasons, and now have Colistra back at the helm.

Weaknesses: While the defense wasn’t hit too hard by graduation, the midfield was. Spatz, who moved between the defense and midfield is gone, as are Costa and Thomas, who were both relied on to help in the transition game and with goal scoring. As a result, players such as Olivia Fagan and Gia Di Carlo will be called upon to step into bigger roles this season. Yanders will lead a group of young attackers and look to provide Northwestern Lehigh with offensive power.

Outlook: “It’s been a lot easier this season, absolutely. Now, we’ve got fluidity, we have our feet wet and have had the opportunity for all season training. It’s all optional, but we had good numbers show up for the work, so that tells me that they’re determined,” — Northwestern coach Pam Colistra.

PLEASANT VALLEY GIRLS

Head coach: Hanna Doerner - 1st season

Last year’s record: 22-3

Key players lost: Devon Bush, Alivia Rath, Aby Borger, Olivia Iandoli, Bri Palmieri, Ashley Palmieri, Sysali Banks, Morgan Ryals, Sam Ecker, Sara Lesnik,

Returning starters/letterwinners: Rylee Rath, Brielle Halamar, Gabby Kutzler, Sam Miller, Evelyn VanDerheyden

Others to watch: Alyzah Borger, Peyton Knecht

Strengths: Strong culture and team chemistry

Weaknesses: Loss of last year’s senior class

Outlook: “With the loss of 10 seniors, and most of them being starters, the team has been working hard to find and succeed in their new roles. We are excited to see how some younger players step up and take leadership.” — Pleasant Valley coach Hanna Doerner

NORTHWESTERN BOYS

Head coach: Tyler Corpora - 1st season

Last year’s record: 11-8

Key players lost: Weiland Hite, Jared Meck, Kaden Rausch, Carter Uhl, Josh Wambold, Carter Zentz

Returning starters/letterwinners: Austin Bittenbender, Hunter Greenawalt, Blake Howard, Tyler Kaas, Dane Kauker, Braxton Lakatosh, Brayden Uricchio, Logan Uricchio, Kendall Wikert

Others to watch: Nick Whitney

Strengths: Tyler Kaas and Kendall Wikert were the top two scorers for Northwestern last season as a sophomore and freshman, respectively. They are both back, as are Austin Bittenbender, Hunter Greenawalt, Braxton Lakatosh, and Braydon Uricchio to give Northwestern an impressive array of goal scorers and experienced leaders offensively. Defensively, Dane Kauker returns for his second season in goal. The fact that new coach Tyler Corpora was on Marcus Janda’s staff for three seasons means that the changes that go with a coaching move were not wholesale changes for the players to adjust to.

Weaknesses: There really isn’t much about this team to call “weak.” The losses were limited, and the fact that young players found time on the field last season when the Tigers pushed games out of hand gave them varsity experience that they can carry forward to this season. The defense could have a little work to do in getting everybody used to everyone else, but they should be able to weather any learning curve they have early in the season.

Outlook: “Marcus ran a great program, and I want to keep a lot of the traditions that he brought to the school and built in this program. He created such a strong work ethic with these guys and a strong bond, and I want to build on that. I like to do things a little bit faster paced; I learned that from my college practices and some of the best coaches I have played under, so we have done a lot of fast-paced practices to prepare us for games.” — Northwestern coach Tyler Corpora.

PLEASANT VALLEY BOYS

Head coach: John Smith

Last year’s record: 3-13

Key players lost: Jake Smith, Zane Kromer

Returning starters/letterwinners: Chris Ward, Steven Walters, Cooper Kromer Blake Regina Nate Tyner, Ricky Merklin.

Others to watch: Luke Smith, Gavin Dorshimer, Cameron Ward.

Strengths: Offensive experience

Weaknesses: Depth of bench skills

Outlook: “We will work hard and give 100 percent. If we do that, we won’t have any regrets, no matter the outcome.” — Pleasant Valley coach John Smith
