Bears’ Gillespie keeps rolling

BETHLEHEM — When you become your school’s first wrestling district champion in 14 years, there tends to be some added fanfare.

Evan Gillespie felt the extra attention at school all week after winning district gold last weekend at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Now, he looks to add another gold medal around his neck on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast Regional 3A tournament.

Gillespie (215) picked up right where he left off from last week’s dazzling tournament, knocking off both of his opponents in Friday’s preliminary and quarterfinal rounds by fall.

He was dominant in both matches, pinning LaSalle’s Rocco Gallo in :49 seconds to kickoff his tournament and followed with a fall over Owen Hoffman of Selinsgrove in 1:04.

“I’m the same wrestler and just doing the same stuff I did a week ago,” said Gillespie. “Not really trying to make major improvements at this point. Just go out there and wrestle my match.”

Wrestling his match continues to be a problem for the opposition, as Gillespie (34-2) has now pinned his last six opponents in the postseason, with all of those falls coming in the first period.

He’ll face Pittston’s Brody Spindler in tomorrow’s 11 a.m. semifinals in a bout that on paper looks like it can be daunting, but in reality, it probably won’t be. Spindler is 41-2 on the season and pinned his way to a district title a week ago. He matches up better with Gillespie’s size compared to Hoffman and Gallo, but lacks a scoring punch. And there’s that whole physicality thing that Gillespie has over everyone in the bracket.

“I look at all these matches as stepping stones,” said Gillespie. “I just think about what I have to do match-by-match to get through.”

Wrestling begins on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the second round of consolations, followed by semifinals at 11 a.m.

The consolation and championship finals are slated for 4 p.m.

Gillespie hopes that another championship this weekend could be a perfect stepping stone to next week’s PIAA championships in Hershey.

“I think being a regional champ would be a lot bigger than a district champ,” he said.
