Lenten services
• Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Brodheadsville will host its next Wednesday Lenten dinner and program tonight with the Rev. Bob Simon at 6 p.m. It also holds programs at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays; those include coffee with the program. Upcoming programs at both 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. are on March 4, 11, 18 and 25.
• The Lenten service for St. Matthew’s in Kunkletown will be held at Bethany EC, Lehighton, tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Art show ending
There is currently a patriotic-themed art show at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville.
People can vote for their favorite artwork through the rest of February. The top three winners will be chosen by popular vote and receive monetary prizes.
Sweet sponsoring
Anyone who sponsors a maple tree at Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center will receive a pint of fresh maple syrup; a certificate; free admission to one of the Public Day Programs on either March 7 or 14 for up to four people; and a map showing the location of the sponsored tree in the center’s sugarbush.
The deadline for returning a form is Thursday.

Quilts due at MCHA
For those who are participating in the Monroe County Historical Association quilt contest, your 30-inch by 30-inch entry with a patriotic theme must be submitted Friday.

Tick report
Early in the week the Tick Research Lab at East Stroudsburg University sent a reminder that ticks can spread common tick-borne illnesses. Those illnesses can affect heart health if left untreated.
If bitten by a tick, the Tick Research Lab of Pennsylvania offers a “Free Basic Panel Tick Testing for PA residents” through funds received from the state Department of Health.
To submit a tick to the lab for testing take it to the Tick Research Lab, 562, Independence Road, Suite 114, East Stroudsburg, or call the office for more information at 570-422-7892.
Tuscan chicken
American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert has a Tuscan chicken sandwich on the menu beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Display closing
The Conservation Art Exhibition at Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center featuring artwork and maps created by local conservation partners from watershed associations and fishing clubs to educators and beyond will close Friday.
There is no charge for the exhibit. Call 570-629-3061 with any questions.
The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Online survey
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is “seeking public input on traffic safety and driving behaviors through an online survey.” The survey is open through Saturday at pa.gov/dotsafety and should take about five minutes to complete.
Communion set
St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effort will hold its Second Sunday in Lent worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. It will include Holy Communion. Grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available.
2 block shoots
This Sunday and again on March 29 the Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club is hosting a block shoot and meat raffle.
They are 12-gauge shotgun only events.

West End Memorial American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert will host the Sons of the American Legion meeting from 6-7 p.m. March 4.
Historical societies
The West End Historical Societies will meet at the Western Pocono Community Library’s public meeting room at 1 p.m. March 7.
Discussed will be the planning for the America 250th celebration that will be held July 2-4 at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

Hoagie sale
St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effort is holding a March hoagie sale. Orders and money are due by March 8.
The sale will be on March 13.
Spaghetti dinner
Mark the calendar for a spaghetti takeout dinner at Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kresgeville for March 14 from 4-5:30 p.m.
It includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad with celery seed dressing, garlic bread and dessert.

Canceled stamps
Wounded Warriors can use your canceled stamps for rehabilitation and to earn much needed funding.
Stamps being sought include commemoratives old stamps, overseas stamps, even unused stamps, stamp albums, etc. An address for the organization is P.O. Box 927, Dunn Loring, VA 22027-0297. It has been involved in serving veterans since 1942.
Free at cathedral
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Brodheadsville provides notice that the Cathedral of Saint Peter at 315 Wyoming Ave. in Scranton will be the site of a free performance of “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” at 6:30 p.m. March 6.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear the beautiful setting of the texts of the meditations of the sorrowful mother of Jesus, the church bulletin says. A freewill offering will be accepted to help defray costs.

Egg hunt planned
McMichaels UMC is having a luncheon after its Palm Sunday worship service on March 29. The service will include Holy Communion, and a luncheon will follow.
There will be an Easter egg hunt after the luncheon.
