Carbon addresses election process

Carbon County officials addressed recent rumors going around stating that the county election office is calling elected officials and telling them they need to resign.

During the monthly county election board meeting Thursday, officials said that the bureau is updating their files for the upcoming election and was contacting people who had won two positions to inform them that state election code requires them to resign from one of the two positions.

“You have to resign one and accept the other,” Commissioner Mike Sofranko said, clarifying the rumors that has been going around recently. “We’re not asking you to resign, it’s just that that is the law. You can’t hold two positions so you’re asked to make a decision.”

He thanked voters for doing write-ins during elections when no one is up for office, however, sometimes then a person is elected to multiple position, for example as both judge of elections and inspector of elections.

“It’s by election code,” he said.

“If we call you, it’s because you hold two positions,” Jennifer Ketchledge, election director, added. “...Nobody is being told to resign and you can turn down both.”

She continued that during these calls, some people didn’t even know their name had been written in and that they had won the position.

Ketchledge said that this is part of the necessary housekeeping elections offices have to do to maintain proper records.
