Tamaqua woman charged with apartment fire

The Tamaqua woman who set fire to a borough apartment building on Feb. 11 was arraigned Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer.

Keyshawna Hausman, 28, faces charges of arson: inhabited building; aggravated arson: bodily injury; arson: danger of death or bodily injury, risking catastrophe, criminal mischief and recklessly endangering another person.

During the arraignment, police were asked whether anyone had been injured in the fire. When officers answered, “yes,” Hausman immediately said, “Good. I wish they would have died.”

Hausman is being held at the Schuylkill County Prison on $50,000 straight cash bail.

Police charged Hausman with starting the fire at the 44 Mauch Chunk St. apartment building at 12:42 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an active fire in a second floor apartment.

Hausman had to be rescued from a second-floor window of the building, and after being brought to safety and evaluated by medical personnel, she admitted to starting the fire.

A 62-year-old female resident who uses a walker was carried out of the building by an emergency medical technician. A second EMT was evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation.

Hausman was transported by Tamaqua EMS to St. Luke’s Miners campus for treatment of injuries and smoke inhalation.

Tamaqua police later met with the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal who located remnants of a shower curtain within the fire area. The investigation determined that the fire originated along a wall in the second floor unit, spread within that apartment and was intentionally set.

Due to the rapid response and coordinated actions of the fire departments, the fire was contained to the apartment where it originated.

No fire damage occurred to the remaining units. After the scene was secured and deemed safe, other residents were permitted to reenter their apartments.

In January, police charged Hausman with simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness after she allegedly fought with two residents of the apartment building.

During that Jan. 6 incident, police said Hausman attacked, bit and punched a male resident who was doing laundry in the hallway. A female resident heard the commotion and tried to de-escalate the altercation. Both sought medical evaluations.

Officers said Hausman said she attacked the man because everyone in the apartment building talks about her.
