A Tamaqua man was sent to prison after an investigation revealed that a large package of cocaine was mailed to him.
The Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General is charging Jose Lebron, 41, of the 200 block of Cedar Street, with possession with intent to deliver, conspiracy with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility.
According to arrest papers, the US Postal Services’ Inspector Services Narcotics Parcel Interdiction Unit flagged a package that appeared to contain narcotics at the USPS Lehigh Valley postal sorting facility on May 15. After receiving a federal search warrant, the package, originating from Puerto Rico and addressed to Lebron in Tamaqua, was opened and found to contain about a kilogram of cocaine.
Through a joint effort of the Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics investigators, USPS’ inspectors office and Allentown Police Department, the parcel was dropped off at Lebron’s apartment on May 20. Law enforcement observed Lebron retrieve it about two minutes later. Lebron left the residence a short time later and was stopped by Tamaqua police who took him into custody without incident.
Lebron admitted to investigators that he began “working” for someone who would send him cocaine. He said that over the course of three to four months, he received about six packages and would give them to the person.
Lebron was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison on $50,000 cash bail.
