Officer-involved shooting investigation underway in Sugarloaf

State police at the Hazleton barracks are investigating an officer-involved shooting in which a man who opened fire on police was shot and killed on Monday in Sugarloaf Township.

Police said at about 9:30 p.m. they were notified of a traffic stop that resulted in the shooting on West County Road in the township. They said through investigation, it was determined an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle. After not yielding for approximately 2 miles, the vehicle then voluntarily stopped, and contained two front seat subjects. During the traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle exited and secured a long gun, advanced towards the Sugarloaf Township Police patrol vehicle, pointed and fired his weapon towards the Sugarloaf officer, striking his patrol vehicle several times.

Police said the man’s actions prompted the officer to return fire. The 66-year-old man, was pronounced deceased on scene.

Police said a 50-year-old man who was a passenger in the car was taken into custody on an unrelated criminal warrant and lodged at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

Sugarloaf Township Police Department placed the officer involved on administrative leave.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop N Major Case Team has been activated to investigate this case, in conjunction with the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office.
