Because Weissport Borough has not hired a new tax collector yet, Carbon County will collect the occupation, per capita and real estate taxes, while the Lehighton Area School District will collect the school taxes.
The county and district will collect the taxes until Weissport hires a new tax collector.
Tax Collector Lynette Moyer resigned in January after a heated discussion over $38,000 in delinquent garbage bills.
In Weissport, 20 accounts are about to be sent to the district judge. One owes more than $10,000.
Last week Councilman Tim Rehrig said, “Half the town isn’t paying taxes.”
Rehrig was speaking about his research based on the Carbon Board of Assessment letter received. Going over the 2025 list of people from the borough, he determined that about 210 Weissport residents were being taxed properly. The actual population of the borough is just over 400 people, which means that about half of the town is not registered and paying taxes.
“That means all taxes,” Rehrig said.
“Borough and school taxes. I believe that it has a lot to do with rentals and properties being sold, and residents not applying for moving permits.”
The 2026 list will be released in a few weeks, and Rehrig plans to go over that updated list to determine how many are still not paying taxes, and then borough council can decide what to do about it.
Weissport has an ordinance that requires all people moving in or out of the borough to apply for a moving permit from the borough office.
