Area coaches, writers make Super Bowl picks
Lehighton head football coach Tom McCarroll’s favorite Super Bowl was in 1986 when Chicago’s or “Da Bears’ defense was “The Monsters of the Midway” under then defensive coordinator and future Eagles’ head coach Buddy Ryan.
Palmerton head football coach Chris Walkowiak’s favorite Super Bowl was when Pittsburgh’s Santonio Holmes made a game-winning catch to propel the Steelers over the Cardinals in 2009.
What, no Eagles’ Super Bowl victories from these coaches? Not all local football coaches are Birds’ fans.
Along with McCarroll and Walkowiak, other local coaches and the Times News sports staff also recalled their favorite Super Bowls as well as provided their predictions for the big game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks Sunday.
It may be surprising and ironic that all of the local coaches and sports writers chose the same team.
Jim Thorpe head coach Mark Rosenberger: “Seahawks 23-13. My favorite Super Bowl was the Steelers beating the Rams. It was the first one I remember watching with my family!”
McCarroll: “Seattle 27, New England 21. Seattle’s defense will be the main factor in this game. Sam Darnold is also the more experienced QB and is coming off one of his best games of the season.”
Marian head coach Bill O’Gurek: “Seahawks 24, Patriots 13. Don’t see the Patriots offense being able to move the ball consistently enough to win the game.
“As for my favorite Super Bowl, it has to be Super Bowl LII. Eagles 41 Patriots 33. The Philly Special. Doesn’t get any better than that.”
Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout: “My prediction is Seattle 31-17.
“Seattle is clicking on all cylinders right now, and I think the Patriots’ best chance to win is a low scoring defensive battle, which I don’t think will happen.”
“My favorite Super Bowl was LII in 2018. I’m a lifelong Eagles’ fan, and so is my dad. We were able to watch that game together. To top it off, it was an extremely exciting game.”
Walkowiak: “Seahawks 24, Patriots 21.”
“The Seahawks’ defense and Sam Darnold will be the difference in the game.”
Panther Valley head coach Mark Lavine: “My prediction is Seattle, 31-14.
“I think this year the Seahawks have the better team and are peaking at the right time. I also feel like they are the more complete team.
“My favorite Super Bowl was Super Bowl XVII when my Redskins won their first Super Bowl in 1983 and my favorite player, John Riggins, won the MVP.”
Pleasant Valley head coach Blaec Saeger: “Seattle, 30-17.”
“I think the Seahawks will win because they just seem to be the more well-rounded team.
“My favorite Super Bowl was the Eagles’ 2018 victory.”
Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner: “Seattle 21-17.”
“They have an experienced quarterback and a very tough defense. If they get an early lead, New England will have a tough time.
“I always remember the Titans versus Rams (in 2000), a great game that went down to the last play. Also, there was a snowstorm that night. I remember digging people out of my driveway, and also knew I didn’t have to worry about getting up early for work due to the weather.”
Sports Editor Patrick Matsinko: “Seahawks 27, Patriots 21.”
“Call it a feeling, call it de ja vu, but this matchup screams late-game tension. The Patriots hang around, and Seattle’s defense delivers the one play that decides everything.”
Assistant Sports Editor Rod Heckman: “Seattle 31-13.”
“Quite honestly, I don’t have much interest in the Super Bowl this year. I’m more excited about the Winter Olympics and the start of the MLB season.
“As for a prediction, I think Seattle’s defense will make things difficult for the Patriots. Also, growing up I liked Jim Zorn, so I guess I’m going with the Seahawks.”
Sports Writer Brock Heckman: “Seahawks, 17-14.”
“I think the Patriots’ defense will keep the score low, but Seattle will be able to generate enough offense to win.”
Sports Writer TJ Engle: “Seattle 31, New England 21.”
“All eyes will be on Sam Darnold to have a big game. With that, the attention may turn to either Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, or Rahsid Shaheed to make it possible through the air. However, that expected air-attack will open a fair chance Kenneth Walker III – probably an odd man out for the MVP award – to steal the show in a Super Bowl victory for the Seahawks.”
Sports Writer Rich Strack: “Seahawks, 38-7.”
“Seattle is strong on both sides of the ball. Their only vulnerability is (Sam) Darnold, who can feel the pressure of the big game. The Pats have had a pretty easy schedule all season long and barely beat the Broncos who played with a quarterback with virtually no experience. Drake Maye can also apple up in this big game. I see this as a blowout.”
Sports Writer Brad Hurley: “Seahawks 34, Patriots 21.”
“I believe the Seahawks are a more complete team that is balanced offensively. The Patriots played one of the easiest schedules in the NFL this season.”
Sports Writer Sam Matta: “Seahawks, 33-17.”
“The Seahawks are strong on both sides of the ball. They cruise.”
