Slatington Borough Council held a special meeting this week to conduct a hearing to adopt an ordinance that states that Slatington Borough will be responsible for a 1% loan from PENNVEST for the purchase and installation of new water meters throughout the borough.
Closing on the loan is scheduled for March 16, 2026.approved an application for PENNVEST at its monthly August 2025 meeting.
PENNVEST is a state agency that provides low-interest loans and grants for water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure projects across Pennsylvania, including drinking water, wastewater treatment and nonpoint source pollution prevention. The borough was approved for a low-interest loan of $993,340 for the installation of new water meters throughout Slatington.
The new system will place water meters on the outside of homes, eliminating the need for the road crew to enter residents’ homes to read them. The meters will be fully remote and monitored in real time from an office. The water meters currently in use are approximately 30 years old and are no longer very accurate. Installation is expected to begin in the spring by National Meters.
Councilmen Robert Krebs and Andy Hassold attended the meeting by phone.
Councilor David Schnaars made a motion to adopt the ordinance, which was seconded by Councilor William Schippers. The motion passed unanimously
. Council President Ryan Mayberry then made a motion to advertise the vacancy on the Zoning Hearing Board. The motion was approved unanimously.
The vacancy was created when Jamie Sillet’s term ended at the end of 2025.
