Man leads police on high-speed chase through multiple towns

A Lehighton man has been charged with leading police on a high-speed chase through multiple towns in Carbon County Monday night.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jason Pryce of the Lehighton Borough Police Department in the case against Daniel Schaffer:

While conducting traffic enforcement throughout the borough, officers Terry Buss and Pryce observed a blue Ford F-350 truck parked at a gas pump.

Buss ran the registration and learned the truck was registered to Keith Schaffer.

While sitting in the parking lot, the driver of the truck started the vehicle and quickly accelerated out of the parking lot.

The vehicle turned left onto Route 443 and headed toward the McCall Bridge.

Police turned left out of the parking lot onto Route 443 and observed the vehicle crossing over the right fog line as well as drifting in the center turn lane.

Approaching the intersection of Route 443 and the McCall Bridge, the vehicle was partially in the left turn lane and quickly cut right onto the bridge.

Police followed the vehicle onto the McCall Bridge and the vehicle accelerated.

Approaching the intersection of the McCall Bridge and Route 248, the vehicle was in the middle lane to go straight onto Route 209 and quickly cut right to Route 248 eastbound.

Police turned right onto Route 248 and passed all vehicles in the right lane.

Police activated their emergency overhead lights and sirens, but the truck kept going.

Police followed the vehicle down Route 248 eastbound, and the vehicle turned left into Parryville. Police followed the vehicle through Parryville and turned right onto East Fireline.

While following the vehicle, police observed it to be all over the roads and disregarding the speed limit.

The vehicle turned right off East Fireline onto Cherry Hill Road and failed to stop at the stop sign.

Police followed the vehicle down Cherry Hill Road and turned left onto Hemlock Street, where they followed the vehicle up Hemlock Street and while doing so, observed the vehicle drive through several stop signs without stopping before it turned left onto Greenwood Road.

Police went down Greenwood Road and turned right back onto Hemlock Street, followed the vehicle back down Hemlock Street and turned right onto Fireline Road.

Police followed the vehicle down Fireline Road and turned left onto White Street, at which time state police from the Lehighton barracks got behind them. They went up White Street and turned right onto Bank Street, at which time state police got in front of them and took lead in the pursuit.

They turned left off Bank Street and headed west on Route 895, and while following behind, state police were able to get in front of the vehicle and slow down while Lehighton Borough Police got up behind the vehicle and attempted to box it in.

The vehicle turned left off Route 895 and onto a private dirt driveway, where it went sideways into a snowbank while striking a metal gate that was the beginning of the driveway.

The vehicle eventually came to a dead end, where Lehighton Borough Police blocked the vehicle in the front and state police blocked the vehicle from the back.

Police had the driver, Schaffer, 34, exit the vehicle at gunpoint. He was taken into custody.

Pryce took the passenger, Schaffer’s 15-year-old son, into custody.

Police learned Schaffer had an ignition interlock restriction, but the vehicle he was operating did not have an ignition interlock installed.

Schaffer again refused to go for a blood draw.

Schaffer faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officer, endangering welfare of children, obstruct administrative law/other government functions, recklessly endangering another person, illegal operation of vehicle without ignition interlock, DUI, no rear lights, reckless driving, and careless driving.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 11.
