Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 31

Three-time state champion Brenda Banks earned her 100th career win Saturday, taking first at the Battle of the Buck tournament.

The Tamaqua girls basketball team rallied late for a win over Catasauqua, while the Palmerton and Lehighton girls also picked up victories.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Battle of the Buck

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks earned her 100th career win in style, posting a 57-second pin in the finals of the Battle of the Buck 235-pound championship match.

Banks won all three of her bouts at the tourney with falls, needing just 20 seconds and 18 seconds to reach the title match.

The PV senior now has a career record of 100-2, which includes 75 pins.

Banks wasn’t the only Panther champion as Alisa Williams claimed the 170-pound title. Williams captured first by recording a 1:50 pin, a 14-0 major decision, and a 6-0 victory in the final.

Panther Valley, which finished 13th in the team standings out of 31 schools, also received a fifth place from Anelia Bennick at 155.

Wyoming Valley West Tournament

Northern Lehigh’s Anna Trelease took first place at 142 pounds at the Wyoming Valley West Tournament.

Trelease registered a pin over Stroudsburg’s Olivia Applegate in 1:28 in the finals to earn gold.

The Bulldogs’ Emiko Lucas reached the championship bout at 190 after posting a pair of falls, but lost in the title match to earn second.

Elaina Ray (142) and Sophia Papay (148) both gained third-place finishes to help Nolehi grab end fourth in the team standings.

Upper Dauphin Trojan Invitational

Lehighton ended third as a team at the 18-team Upper Dauphin Lady Trojan Invitational.

Kennedy Quinn turned in the top finish for the Indians, placing second at 136 pounds.

Alivia Reed (170) and Kailey Evans (190) both registered pins in their third-place bouts, while Jeinilys Sanchez (100) and Mia Guy (118) each ended in fourth.

Upper Dauphin won the overall team title, while District 11’s Easton finished second.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Catasauqua

Millie Black poured in a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Tamaqua rally past Catasauqua, 50-41.

Down 37-27 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Raiders outscored Catasauqua 23-4 in the final stanza to pull out the win.

Lauren Ligenza pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out four assists, while Leah Black added 12 boards.

Hailey Jenkins paced Catty with 27 points.

Lehighton- Pottsville

Lehighton dominated the middle frames to help register a 45-25 non-league victory over Pottsville.

The Indians, who set a program record for wins in a season, outscored the Tide by a 26-4 margin in the second and third quarters.

Ryleigh Trotman tallied a game-high 13 points for Lehighton, while Leah Uyvari and Olivia Serfass each chipped in with 10.

Pottsville’s Jess Siminitis scored a team-high eight points.

Cate Morgan scored a game-high 15 points to help lead Palmerton to a 40-24 non-league victory over visiting Northampton.

The Bombers took control with a 12-4 third quarter, with Hailey Barry producing five points in the frame.

Emma Rex added 12 points to the winning cause, while the Kids were paced by Isabella Pecuch’s 11 points.

Schuylkill Haven took control of the game in the second quarter, and the Hurricanes moved to their ninth-straight victory with a 53-34 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

The Hurricanes outscored the Panthers 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 15-point halftime lead.

Audrey Hutchinson led Haven with 20 points, while McKenna Rundle added 18.

Panther Valley was led by Caroline Breslin’s 19 points. Lucy Kocha added seven rebounds.

Bangor stormed out to a commanding halftime lead and the Slaters rolled to a 42-26 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley.

The winners held a 22-7 advantage at the half, and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Jakelin Miller registered a game-high 15 points for Bangor, while Kylie Fuentes had seven for Pleasant Valley.

Jake Loch scored eight of his 16 points in the final quarter to help Pleasant Valley slip past Bangor, 49-45, in non-league action.

Pleasant Valley sank 16 of 20 free throws — 12 of 14 in the final quarter.

Trailing 33-24 at the end of three quarters, Bangor erupted for 21 fourth-quarter points, but the Slaters’ rally fell short.

Sebastian Sacci had a team-high 21 points for Pleasant Valley, while Bangor’s Jason Marcantonis led all scorers with 24.

Minersville won its 17th straight game, holding off Marian 53-52 in the game’s final seconds.

The Colts held a 52-50 lead when The Miners’ Camden Rogers drilled a game-winning three-pointer with 7.8 seconds remaining. Marian couldn’t get a shot to fall in the final seconds.

Minersville’s Jordan Bowers had a game-high 24 points, while Jimmy Cannon had a career-high 14 and Greg Tirpak added 14 for Marian.

The Colts also received nine points and six rebounds from Jacob De La Cruz.

Gavin Edmonds topped Tamaqua with 12 points, while Donovan Broadway added 11.

Weatherly battled Schuylkill League Division 2 champion Tri-Valley before falling short by a 79-70 score.

The Wreckers trailed by just one at halftime, but Braeden Doyle scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to keep the Bulldogs undefeated in league play.

Corbin Wagner paced Weatherly with 26 points, while Ian McKeegan tossed in 18 and Matt Adler finished with 12.

Cedar Crest Falcon Invitational

Three Northern Lehigh wrestlers earned medals at the Cedar Crest Falcon Invitational.

The Bulldogs’ Mason Rothrock (160) and Dawson Newhard (215) both earned fourth-place finishes.

Nolehi’s Henry Slonaker added a sixth place at 127 pounds.

Souderton took the overall team championship, while the Bulldogs placed 15th as a team.
