Tamaqua River Walk project keeps rolling along
Plans to extend a walkway along the Little Schuylkill River in Tamaqua are flowing.
Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt updated council on the Tamaqua River Walk project, noting that he’s been meeting monthly with representatives from Alfred Benesch and Company and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
“As you might recall, we have a grant to extend the river walk from where it is now at Boyer’s to (East) Broad Street — right along the river near the Hi-Rise,” Steigerwalt told council Tuesday.
Another walkway will be created on the opposite side of the river, near South Greenwood Street.
“We have a preliminary design and the engineer has also picked out some lighting that he thinks will work,” Steigerwalt said.
The LED lights will likely be placed on the railings of the new and existing walkways.
Steigerwalt will compile the information and share it with council.
The first phase of the project was completed almost a decade ago, with a paved riverside path running between Cedar Street and Willing Park.
Upcoming phases will be supported by the $424,000 PennDOT grant.
The idea for the river walk surfaced when the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership was compiling a community action plan in 2001 and suggested that highlighting the river.
The partnership has purchased several properties to make way for the scenic walkway.
