Civil Service board resignations stall hiring process in Lansford
Lansford Borough Council continues to search for people to round out its Civil Service Commission, the body that conducts testing and compiles an eligibility list for police hires.
The borough was seeking people to serve as alternatives on the panel when two regular members submitted resignations.
Council last week accepted the resignations of Kara S. Krajnak, who was sworn in last month, and Thomas L. Dahl.
Council President George Gilbert read Krajnak’s letter, in which she said she had hoped to help her community and contribute positively.
“However, due to defamatory postings directed toward me on social media — before being given an opportunity to serve or demonstrate my commitment — I have decided that it is in my best interest to step away from this role,” she wrote.
“As a school teacher, my priority is to maintain professionalism and focus on my responsibilities as an educator,” Krajnak said. “Public statements and online attacks that misrepresent my character are counterproductive to my work in education and compromise my ability to service effectively in both capacities.”
The resignations were accepted with regret.
The Civil Service Commission planned to reorganize on Jan. 6, but the meeting was canceled due to lack of a quorum.
Council has not discussed police hirings or the position of chief publicly since reorganization this year.
Newly seated Mayor Denise Leibensperger said that she supports hiring and promoting from within the department, including hiring the current officer in charge, Sgt. Shawn Nunemacher, as chief.
The borough currently has three full-time officers and three part-time officers, she said, and had not had discussions with council regarding hiring more officers with the current restructuring.
The borough also has vacancies on the zoning hearing board, one alternate seat; the Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Sewer Authority; and the borough Vacancy Board.
Council approved the appointment of Lenny Kovatch to the Lansford-Coaldale Joint Water Authority, former Councilwoman Jennifer Staines to the borough planning commission and Council Vice President Joe Genits to the police pension board.
