W. Pocono library hosts art exhibit for America250

The Western Pocono Community Library is hosting a patriotic-themed art exhibit in the library’s media room.

“It’s meant for the America250, which is happening this year. So we figured we’d kick off a little bit with the patriotic art,” said Patti Weiss, the director of the library in Brodheadsville.

The artwork can be seen just to the right from the library’s entrance. All of the works were created by the members of the Pocono Mountain Art Group.

Weiss said the works consist of mostly paintings, but there are also photographs, a stained-glass wall hanging and a piece made from a wooden pallet.

There also is a variety of styles. Some paintings are done with acrylic and range from the very realistic to the abstract, with titles such as “A Family Affair,” “The Boys in Blue” and “Five American Climbers.”

Then there are paintings in watercolor such as “East Point Lighthouse, N.J.” and photographs like the one titled “Honoring Those Who Served.”

When asked which one is her favorite, Weiss said, “I haven’t decided yet. They’re all pretty good.”

Visitors of the library are welcome to vote for their favorite artwork. Each of the 19 pieces has a number that corresponds to that piece.

On a table in the media room, there are pieces of paper for people to write down the number of their favorite artwork and drop it in the box on the table. It’s one vote per person.

The top three winners will be chosen by popular vote, and will receive a monetary prize for first, second and third place.

“I haven’t placed my vote yet,” said Weiss, but she does really like the detail in the painting of the bald eagle titled “Freebird.”

The art show opened the first weekend of January and will continue through the end of February. The library is open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. It is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Weiss said it has been a while since the library hosted an art exhibition by the Pocono Mountains Art Group, but she looks forward to having more exhibits in the future.
