Coaldale seeking students to take part in council
It’s been well over two years since a junior council member has “served” on Coaldale Borough Council.
Council President Rose Hoben wants to see a school student in the role again. Hoben brought up the matter when council reached the “Junior Councilperson Report” section of a recent meeting agenda.
“We still don’t’ have one,” Hoben noted. “I was interested in trying to at least go to the school and put it out there, that if someone was interested in the school — maybe they’re thinking about going into politics. They can get their feet wet.”
She said that the student could learn more about government by attending council meetings.
Councilman Wayne Figner said the thought it was a good idea.
“Maybe there is nobody, but I am willing to go up to the school and talk to them,” Hoben said, referring to the Panther Valley High School.
Marian Catholic High School is also an option.
Junior council members must live in Coaldale.
“I’d be willing to go to the schools to put it out there. Is that something we are willing to try?” Hoben asked.
Council gave Hoben its blessing. She hopes to have more information by February’s meeting.
In keeping with vacancies, Coaldale is seeking two council members. One seat was vacated when former President Claire Remington resigned in December. Another will be open when Councilwoman Kim Gavornik leaves in February to resume the role of borough tax collector.
Council is also seeking a secretary, solicitor and members for the sewer authority board, zoning hearing board and the vacancy board.
