Family Promise of Carbon County opening new shelter in Nesquehoning
Family Promise of Carbon County will open its Cold Weather Shelter on New Year’s Day.
And already, the executive director of the Nesquehoning facility said folks are signing up.
“We’ll be able to host between 12 and 15 for overnight stays, Cathy Lamm said.
Those looking to spend nights must contact the 140 W. Mill St. temporary homeless shelter at 610-379-4757 during business hours to complete an intake request.
Men, women, couples and children are welcome to stay at the cold weather shelter, which will be inside Family Promise’s family community center.
During their stay, they will receive a warm bed, meals and case management services to help with transitioning to sustainable housing.
If transportation is required, Family Promise will provide it.
The cold weather shelter will also be open beginning Thursday to walk-ins and anyone looking for a place to warm up during mornings, afternoons and evenings. No intake request is needed for those not planning to stay overnight.
The shelter will operate 24 hours a day until March.
Family Promise’s “regular” family shelter is reserved for families with children and single women. It currently accommodates 31, including 17 children.
The shelter is seeking donations of Redner’s, Walmart and Aldi gift cards, food items, cleaning supplies and paper products and noted that any contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated
Its mission is to help families experiencing homelessness and low-income families achieve sustainable independence by providing temporary shelter, meals, and support services in order to meet the basic needs of families without permanent housing in Carbon County and the surrounding communities.
