Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 29

The Palmerton girls advanced to the finals of the Stacy Perryman Holiday Classic with a victory over Pocono Mountain West on Monday.

In other action, the Panther Valley girls rolled past Nativity, while plenty of wrestlers were in action during holiday tournaments.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Palmerton-PM West

Palmerton earned a hard-fought 32-28 win over host Pocono Mountain West to advance to the championship game of the Stacy Perryman Holiday Classic.

The Blue Bombers made four free throws in the fourth quarter to help gain the win.

Avery Barry led the way for Palmerton with a game-high 11 points, while Alisyn Green added 10 points, which included a pair of free throws in the fourth.

For the Panthers, Zyairrah Lanier recorded a team-high 10 points.

Nativity-Panther Valley

Panther Valley built a huge lead and coasted to a 66-27 non-league victory over visiting Nativity.

Three Panthers scored in double figures with Morgan Orsulak leading the way with 24 points — 13 of them coming in the opening half.

Ace Aponte netted 10 of her season-high 17 points in the first quarter as PV grabbed a 21-2 advantage. Caroline Breslin also reached double-digit scoring with 14 points.

For Nativity, Emmalee Pinkey hit for a team-high 12 points.

Christmas Tournament

Six Times News area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament and remained alive for a championship.

Lehighton moved four to the semis, as Connor Dugan (139), Lukas Croizier (145), Asher Traylor (215) and Marc Macias (285) all have hopes of a tourney title. Jim Thorpe’s Stephen Korte, who picked up his 100th career win, is two wins away from the 133-pound crown, while Tamaqua’s Rylan Reitz (114) also is unscathed through the first day of competition.

A number of area grapplers reached the quarterfinals but dropped their matches. All of them are alive in the consolation rounds and have sights on earning a medal. They include Brian Reese (107), Sahlem Ortiz (107), both of Jim Thorpe; Michael D’Amico (121), Jack Lucykanish (133), Evan Wentz (152), Carter Hontz (172), all of Lehighton; Conner Arrigo (189), Dawson Newhard (215), Isaac Jackovitz (285), all of Northern Lehigh; as well as Brody Schlier (139) of Tamaqua.

Bethlehem Holiday Classic

Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto reached the championship round at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic, but dropped a 4-1 sudden victory to Brayden Zuercher of Nazareth.

Fugazzotto made it to the finals by posting two pins in the opening rounds and a 12-6 decision over David Clayton of Quakertown in the semis.

The Tiger 189-pound senior battled Zuercher, a defending district 3A champion and a fourth-place finisher at states, to a 1-1 tie through regulation before falling in extra time.

Northwestern, which ended 17th in the team standings out of 30 schools, also received sixth-place finishes from both Trent Croll (145) and Chase Sukanick (152), while Vinnie Fugazzotto (172) ended up in eighth place.

Governor Mifflin

Holiday Tournament

Four Palmerton wrestlers have advanced in the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament.

The Bombers’ Connor Messinger dropped his first match but won his next three — including two pins — to stay alive in the 127-pound bracket.

Thomas Pasquariello scored a pin and a decision in the 114-pound bracket, while teammates Jaxs Miller (133) and Antonio Oller (172) both went 2-1 and will be competing in Tuesday’s action.

Frank Wadas

Wrestling Tournament

Four Pleasant Valley wrestlers have advanced to the semifinal round of the Frank Wadas Wrestling Tournament at Tunkhannock High School.

Jimmy Stipeck (127), James Cordle (160), Adis Vukel (189) and Evan Gillespie (215) are all alive for gold. All four Bears posted pins in the quarterfinals and will be in action today.

Frank Lucarello (107) and Patrick Decker (152) dropped their quarterfinal matches, but will try to battle back in the consolation rounds.

PV’s Zach Jochen (139), Josh Careccia (215), Joseph Mihalichko (285) and Frederick Merklin (285) all posted pins during consolations on Monday.
