Monroe wants to drill well at prison

The Monroe County commissioners are looking to drill a new well for the Monroe County Correctional Facility.

At their meeting on Dec. 17, they rejected the one bid they had received on Pennbid because it was incomplete, said Robert Gress, the chief clerk. The county resubmitted the project and received one bid from Negley’s Well Drilling in Newburg. The bid was opened on Dec. 23 and is in the amount of $109,836.26.

Gress said it will be discussed by commissioners at their meeting on Jan. 7, 2026.

In other business, the commissioners approved a contract with the Monroe County Transportation Authority for public transportation services from Jan. 1, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2026. The costs are as follows:

• Zone 0 to 4 miles — $20 full fare, $2 AAA cost.

• Zone 4 to 8 miles — $23 full fare, $1.45 AAA cost.

• Zone 8 to 12 miles — $27 full fare, $2.05 AAA cost.

• Zone 12 to 16 miles — $32 full fare, $2.80 AAA cost.

• Zone 16 to 20 miles — $37 full fare, $3.55 AAA cost.

• Zone 20 to 30 miles — $47 full fare, $4.05 AAA cost.
