Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 19

Palmerton and Northern Lehigh both posted wins in both boys and girls basketball action on Friday.

Other winners included the Tamaqua and Lehighton girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Saucon Valley-Palmerton

Palmerton snapped a five-game losing streak by earning a 57-48 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Leading by just one heading into the final quarter, Gaige McGowan scored six points during the final period to help the Blue Bombers outscore the Panthers by a 21-13 margin to seal the win.

Kurt Jedrejczyk tallied a team-high 17 points for Palmerton, while McGowan and Cameron Pengelly both finished with 15.

Saucon received a game-high 20 points from Thomas Cahill.

Northern Lehigh-Palisades

Northern Lehigh finished strong en route to a 60-51 Colonial League victory over Palisades.

The Bulldogs trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter against the winless Pirates but used an 18-7 period to pull out the win.

Kellen Bauer finished with a team-high 23 points for the winners while Chayce LoPinto poured in 16. Nolehi also received eight points from both Michael Bauer and Colin Karetsky.

Palisades was paced by Cook’s game-high 25 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Minersville-Tamaqua

A big game by Millie Black helped Tamaqua roll to a 53-26 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Minersville.

Black finished with a double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders, who led by 15 points at halftime, also received nine points, nine rebounds and six assists from Lauren Ligenza.

Cullen topped the Miners with nine points.

Schuylkill Haven placed three girls in double figures, as the Hurricanes swept past Panther Valley 59-30 in Schuylkill League play.

McKenna Runkle and Kylie Siket both recorded 16 points and Ava Terefencko notched 13 for Schuylkill Haven.

For the Panthers, Alicianta Aponte produced 13 points and Morgan Orsulak grabbed 11 rebounds.

Lehighton staked itself to a commanding first-quarter lead, and the Indians remained undefeated with a 49-25 Colonial League rout of Jim Thorpe.

The Tribe took a 19-2 lead after one quarter and led 27-11 at the half.

Olivia Serfass had a game-high 17 points for Lehighton, while Ryleigh Trotman added 10.

The Olympians received a team-high 14 points from Olivia Snisky.

Northern Lehigh registered 31 first-half points, and went on to a convincing 41-19 Colonial League win over Palisades.

The Bulldogs stormed out to a 26-point halftime advantage to help even their season record.

Tegan Simms led Northern Lehigh with 12 points, while Jaylene Ramos chipped in with nine.

The Pirates were paced by Ava Cron’s six points.

Avery Barry scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to pace Palmerton to a 48-31 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

The Blue Bombers opened up a close game by blanking the Panthers 16-0 in the final quarter.

Hailey Barry added 11 points for Palmerton, winners of three straight.

Saucon Valley received a team-high 13 points from Grace Donahue.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Beast of the East Tourney

Lehighton posted a respectable 21st place at the Beast of the East Tournament, held at the University of Delaware.

The Indians were one of 133 teams that participated in the event, finishing with 51 points. District 11’s Parkland (third) and Southern Lehigh (ninth) both placed in the top-10.

Kennedy Quinn posted a 4-3 mark at the two-day tournament and ended in eighth place at 135 pounds. Mia Guy went 2-2 at 115.

Emmaus-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley received pins from Taylor Hawkins, Mikayla Slamiak and Hailey Marsh, but Emmaus registered a 53-21 victory.

Slamiak’s fall came in just 33 seconds at 170, while Hawkins also posted her pin in the first period.

The Bears also received a decision win from Josie Fetterman at 148.
