Barron steps down as Marian girls coach
Marian Catholic High School announced Tuesday that Jeanette Barron has resigned as head girls basketball coach due to personal reasons, effective immediately.
The announcement was posted on the school’s Facebook page on the same day the Fillies were scheduled to play Lourdes Regional.
Former Fillies assistant coach Jeff Onushco has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Marian expressed its gratitude to Barron for stepping into the role prior to the season, and for the time and effort she contributed to the Fillies basketball program. Barron will continue to be a valued member of the Marian community in her role as a social studies teacher.
Barron was hired in September to take over the program following the departure of longtime coach Damian Fritz, who left the Marian bench in the summer and is now the head girls coach at Pottsville. Under Fritz, Marian reached the PIAA quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons, and captured District 11 championships in 2021-22 (Class 1A) and 2022-23 (Class 2A).
A Marian history teacher, Barron brought extensive playing and coaching experience to the position, along with strong ties to the school community. She was inducted earlier this year into the Hazleton Sports Hall of Fame following a standout playing career.
A former point guard at West Hazleton High School, Barron set school records for assists and scoring and earned First Team honors from the Standard-Speaker and Pottsville Republican all four years of her career. She was named Player of the Year by both publications as a senior.
Barron went on to play Division II basketball at Lock Haven University, where she started all four seasons and finished her career among the school’s leaders in assists and field goal attempts. She also gained international experience during a summer tour of Europe, competing in seven countries.
Her coaching résumé includes serving as a JV and assistant coach at Hazleton Elementary Middle School under Pat Brogan, leading a traveling team, and working with high school AAU programs alongside longtime coach Joe Barletta. At the time of her hiring, Marian cited Barron’s emphasis on player development, team chemistry and building a strong foundation for the future.
Barron is the mother of three Marian Catholic graduates — Bethany (2015), Emily (2020) and Katie (2025). Emily Barron was a 1,000-point scorer for the Fillies.
Marian enters the week with a 2-3 record this season.
The Fillies’ scheduled girls basketball game against Lourdes Regional was postponed and has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 6 p.m. at Marian Catholic.
