Gerald L. Haggerty Jr., a Jim Thorpe resident, will be retiring on Friday as postmaster of the Summit Hill Post Office and after having worked for 31 years for the United States Postal Service.

The departing public servant said he plans to work in the future at building his tax and financial services business in his hometown, spend more time with his wife, the former JoAnn Highland, and his 14-year-old son Alex.

He started the income tax and financial planning business in 1998.

Jared Diehl, who is a supervisor in the Tamaqua Post Office, will serve as officer-in-charge of the Summit Hill facility beginning next week.
