Friends of Beltzville repurpose items into unique gifts
Bernard’s Green Valley Farm in Slatington will be offering unique craft products for sale at the farm through Christmas. Each one-of-a-kind craft was made by members of the Friends of Beltzville Eco Arts & Crafts Group, whose goal is to “foster creativity, community and care for our planet by repurposing and reusing items destined for a landfill.”
Louis Bernard, father-in-law of Friends group member Amy Bernard, began the farm in 1980.
Her husband, Jonathan, is the primary caretaker of the trees on the farm. He built the barn from wood on the farm, which is used as the retail space.
Amy will be making friendship bracelets for sale at the farm for $1 with 100% of the proceeds going to the Friends group. Bernard noted, “You could see the thoughtfulness and love pouring from these crafts made by the Friends group.”
Repurchased books have become angels and Christmas trees, by painstakingly folding every single page, which can actually be meditative. Books come from donations that aren’t able to be used at the Friends group’s Little Free Library.
Allison Karnish just joined the group, having heard about it from the Walk With Ease program.
Karnish said, “It’s a nice supportive group.” She used real hydrangeas surrounding a book made into a Christmas tree.
Old yogurt jars, Mason jars, dried flowers, leaves and wrapping paper are some of the repurposed items used for crafts.
Money raised from sale of the crafts helps with local conservation and sustainability of the park. It’s a way to make a donation to a nonprofit. Perhaps think twice before throwing something away that you may be able to use, but it’s mostly about fun, explained Friends group Chair Diane Szwajkowski.
The arts and craft group is open to all Friends of Beltzville members. They try to come up with ideas as a group and keep with a theme for the projects.
Member Sherry Ferguson noted, “I like to be creative and enjoy being with these people. It’s camaraderie, which sparks inspiration.”
Items on sale at Bernard’s Green Valley Farm range from $1 to $20.
Other vendors will also have displays at the farm. Find a unique holiday gift and enjoy the farm, which primarily functions as a “choose and cut” Christmas tree farm, with wreaths, garland and jams and jellies also available for sale.
Bernard Green Valley Farm is located at 2925 High Hill Road, Slatington. Hours of operation are every weekend 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
