Lansford discusses civil service actions

Lansford Borough Council acknowledged the resignation of its Civil Service Commission chairman and his withdrawal of the resignation, before voting to remove him from the commission Wednesday night.

Last month, John Zym made a presentation to borough council on how to attract more police candidates and a week later submitted his resignation from the commission.

Council could not act on Zym’s resignation last month, as it was submitted too late to be added to council’s agenda. In it, Zym criticized council members for playing with the safety of the community and furthering their own agendas.

“An adequately staffed, professional and fully functioning police force is the WILL of the residents of Lansford, but clearly not the goal of council,” Zym wrote.

“Lansford Police have a long history of being neglected by council,” he continued. “This has been going on long before I was appointed to the Civil Service Commission. Each and every member of council should be held accountable.

“I will no longer be a part of this game of ‘hot potato’ council is playing with the residents of Lansford Borough,” Zym concluded in his resignation.

After acknowledging the correspondence from Zym on Wednesday, council in a separate motion voted unanimously to remove him from the commission.

Council then appointed Kara S. Krajnak, an alternate member of the commission, as a regular member of the panel.

Councilman George Gilbert abstained on the vote.

Other alternates are Robert Silver and Joseph M. Seaver.

Other resignations

Council also accepted the resignation of Denise A. Leibensperger from the zoning hearing board. Leibensperger, who won her bid for Lansford mayor, cannot hold dual roles in the borough and stepped down from the zoning board.

Leibensperger will take office in January, replacing outgoing Mayor Hugh Vrablic.

Council also acknowledged the resignation of Leonard Ruggiero from the planning commission and the withdrawal of the resignation. No other action was needed.
