A fiery crash Thursday at 6:03 a.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound in Nescopeck Township, Luzerne County, claimed the life of one person.
State police at the Hazleton barracks said the crash occurred when the section of the interstate was being shut down due to another crash.
Police said they responded to mile marker 249.7 for a report of a multivehicle crash with injuries and entrapment.
Through the investigation, it was determined a truck with a mounted arrow board was parked unoccupied on the left shoulder of the interstate, partially in the left lane as it was actively shutting down the left lane due to a previous crash and redirecting traffic to move into the right lane.
Police said a vehicle traveling in the left lane went through the coned-off portion of the left lane and rear-ended the truck that was shutting down the highway, pushing it into the guide rail on the left side of the roadway.
The vehicle that struck the truck proceeded to strike the guide rail on the right side of the roadway, becoming stationary and catching fire.
Police said its operator was trapped inside the vehicle and was discovered dead.
