County says talks continue over Lehighton senior center lease

Carbon County officials say they are working to find a suitable agreement with Lehighton for future use of the Lehighton Recreation Center.

On Thursday, commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko addressed recent social media posts regarding the increase in the lease for the county using the recreation center for the Lehighton Senior Center.

“I know there’s been a lot said about the Lehighton Senior Center out there,” Sofranko said. “We just would like everyone to be aware that the county commissioners are currently working back and forth with representatives from the Lehighton Borough to resolve the issues that Lehighton Borough has been having. We’ll have more on that as discussions progress.”

Sofranko said that while social media can be a good thing, it also can facilitate the spread of rumors and stressed that people should not always take posts as fact.

“As we work through this, we will have some more on it,” he said. “I would like to thank the representatives from Lehighton Borough who have reached out to all three members of the board here.

“We should definitely have some more on that after the borough gets a chance to sit and discuss it. So we’ll go from there.”

Carbon County uses the recreation center for its senior center, as well as the main location for the annual Senior Games.
