Few local districts have races
Two of five Carbon County school districts had contested races in the General Election on Tuesday, while there were no races in either the Tamaqua or Mahanoy Area school districts that include Times News coverage areas.
Voters in county municipalities of Banks Township and Beaver Meadows did participate in a challenged race in the Hazleton Area School District.
The contested local races were in the Lehighton and Palmerton school districts.
But in the Panther Valley, Jim Thorpe and Weatherly school districts, there were no challenges.
Panther Valley Board
Four candidates sought four positions on the district’s board of education.
Receiving complimentary votes in Carbon balloting (Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill) were Shawn J. Hoben, 1,582 votes; Kim A. Laird, 1,538 votes; Ronald Shawn Yuricheck, 1,469 votes; and Ryan Eidle, 1,384 votes.
In Coaldale balloting, Hoben tallied 305 votes, Laird, 274, Yuricheck, 267, and Eidle, 250.
Jim Thorpe Area Board
There was no race in the balloting for four seats on the district’s board of education, as there were only three candidates yesterday.
Collecting token votes were Megan Demshick, 2,528 votes; Dennis J. McGinley, 2,415 votes; and Gerald “Jerry” Strubinger, 1,984 votes.
Voters in Jim Thorpe, Penn Forest Township and the South District of Kidder Township participated in the at-large voting for the district.
Weatherly Area Board
There was also no race for four positions on the Weatherly board.
Token votes were cast for Ryan P. Binder, 825 votes, Barbara Sipler, 730 votes, Nancy Mulvaney, 728 votes, and Gerard Grega, 724 votes.
Grega was also the only one seeking the two-year term on the board, for which he received 788 token votes.
Voters in East Side and Weatherly boroughs and Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer Township, as well as those in Kidder Township’s North District, participated in the at-large voting in the district.
Tamaqua Area Board
There were four candidates for four positions of the Tamaqua board.
Receiving token votes were Nicholas Boyle, 2,823 votes, Nancy Jones, 2,789 votes, Bryan Miller, 2,616 votes, and Curtis H. Hartung, 2,390 votes.
Voters in Tamaqua Borough and Rush, Schuylkill, Walker and West Penn townships participated in the at-large balloting in the district.
Mahanoy Area Board
Voters in Delano and Ryan townships participated in the at-large balloting in the Mahanoy Area School District.
Unchallenged candidates for board seats and their vote totals included Karen Yedsena, 1,231 votes, Steven J. Gnall, 1,132 votes, John Honus, 1,100 votes, and Jim Mitchell, 1,073 votes.
Hazleton Area School Board
Voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows participated in the balloting for four terms on the Hazleton school board.
Five candidates sought the posts. Their Carbon totals were Ed Shemansky, 226 votes, Carmella Yenkevich, 224 votes, Jared M. O’Donnell, 218 votes, Wister Yuhas, 205 votes, and Patricia Tomsho, 201 votes.
