Election: Races set for Nov. 4 in Northern Carbon County
Voters in Northern Carbon County won’t have many election decisions to make when they go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, as only one of seven municipalities in that part of the county has a contested race this time around.
The race is in Weatherly Borough, where six candidates are running for four four-year terms of office that are to be filled by the electorate.
Here is a look at what voters will see on the ballots of the respective municipalities:
Weatherly Borough
The council candidates include two people who will appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, having won the nominations in May. They are Susan Danenhower and Norman B. Richie.
The other four candidates are Democrats Theresa D’Andrea and Greg Walters, and Republicans Jeffery Miller and Vincent A. Cuddeford II.
Unopposed candidates on the borough’s ballot include: Deborah A. Kohler, Republican, seeking the four-year term as tax collector; Barbara J. Cunnius, Democrat, four-year term as judge of elections in the East District; and Virginia L. Houser, Republican, four-year term as inspector of elections in the East District.
There are no candidates for judge of elections and inspector of elections in the West District.
Banks Township
There are only two names on the Banks Township ballot.
Unopposed are William J. Nice, Democrat, seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors, and Antoinette “Tawnie” Porpiglia, Democrat, running for the four-year term as tax collector.
No one is running for three auditor positions, for two-, four- and six-years, nor the four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections.
Lausanne Township
Like Banks, there are only two candidates seeking positions in Lausanne Township.
Unopposed are Edward Klynowsky, Republican, seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors, and Melanie J. Zacharias, Republican, running for the four-year term as tax collector.
No one is running for three auditor positions, of two-, four- and six-years, nor the four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections.
Lehigh Township
The situation with Lehigh’s ballot is the same as that of Banks and Lausanne, as only two people are running in the township.
Unopposed are Terry D. Souder III, Republican, seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors, and Teresa M. Barna, Republican, running for the four-year term as tax collector.
There are no candidates in Lehigh for a six-year term as auditor, nor the four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections.
Packer Township
Packer Township voters will see four names on the township ballot, and all four candidates are unchallenged.
All Republicans, they are Robert Selert, seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors; Valeria Kane, four-year term as tax collector; Alicia Nyer, four-year term as judge of elections; and Kristin Wilkinson, four-year term as inspector of elections.
No one is running for two auditor’s positions of four- and six-years.
Beaver Meadows
There are no contests in Beaver Meadows this time around.
Michael B. Gerhard, Republican, is the lone candidate for the four-year term as mayor, and there are only three candidates for four four-year terms on the borough council that are slated to be filled by the voters. They are Democrat Robert J. Cryder III and Republicans Gerhard and Michael Baran.
Unopposed are John Tranguch and Judith Tranguch, Republicans, who are running for judge of elections and inspector of elections, respectively.
There is no candidate for the four-year term of tax collector in the borough.
East Side Borough
Unopposed candidates in East Side Borough include Eric Siglin, who is running for the four-year term as mayor with no political affiliation; Sharon Mrozinski, Republican, seeking one of four four-year terms on the borough council; and Lisa Jones, Republican, aspiring to the four-year term as tax collector.
There are no candidates in the borough for the four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections.
Weatherly School Board
There is also no race for positions on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education, where four four-year terms are to be decided.
There are only four candidates: Barbara Sipler and Ryan P. Binder, who appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, and Republican candidates Nancy Mulvaney and Gerard Grega.
Grega is also the only one seeking the two-year term that is up for grabs. He is on the Republican ballot.
Voters in Lausanne, Lehigh, Packer, East Side, Weatherly and Kidder Township’s North District vote in the school district at-large balloting.
Hazleton School Board
Voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows will participate in the balloting for four four-year terms on the Hazleton Area School District Board of Education.
There is a race in this balloting as there are five candidates: Carmella Yenkevich, Patricia Tomsho and Ed Shemansky, who appear on both ballots, Democrat Wister Yuhas and Republican Jared M. O’Donnell.
