Lehighton, Palmerton, Pleasant Vy. races contested

Two of five Carbon County school districts will have contested races in the General Election on Nov. 4, while voters in county municipalities of Banks Township and Beaver Meadows will also participate in a challenged race in the Hazleton Area School District.

The contested local races are in the Lehighton and Palmerton school districts.

In Schuylkill County, Times News area voters in the Tamaqua and Mahanoy Area school districts do not have any contested races this time around.

Pleasant Valley School Board in Monroe County also has contenders.

Here is a look at what voters will see on the respective ballots:

Lehighton Area School Board

Control of the district’s board of education is at apparent stake as five people will be elected this time.

One of them is William Howland, who is an unopposed candidate for the two-year term that is available. He won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the Primary Election.

Meanwhile, six persons are aspiring to the four four-year terms that are up for grabs. They include Timothy M. Tkach and Lory A. Frey, who both won Democratic and Republican nominations in May, Democrats Alex Matika and Kasara B. Weinrich and Republicans Joy Beers and Duane Dellecker.

Voters in Lehighton, Parryville and Weissport boroughs and East Penn, Franklin, Mahoning townships participate in the district’s balloting.

Palmerton Area School Board

Five people are seeking four four-year terms on the district’s board of education.

They are Stacey Connell, Erin Snyder and Earl Paules, who will appear as both Democratic and Republican candidates, Democrat Michael George and Republican Danielle Paules.

Magin Gursky, Republican, is an unopposed candidate for a two-year term on the board

Voters in Bowmanstown and Palmerton boroughs and Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships participate in the district’s balloting.

Panther Valley School Board

There is no contest in the Panther Valley School District Board of Education balloting, as there are four candidates running for four four-year terms.

They are Shawn J. Hoben, Kim A. Laird, Ronald Shawn Yuricheck and Ryan Eidle, who each appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

Voters in Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill participate in the district’s balloting, as do the voters in Coaldale in Schuylkill County.

Jim Thorpe Area School Board

There is no race in the balloting for the Jim Thorpe Area School District Board of Education as only three candidates appear on the ballots for four four-year terms that are to be filled.

The candidates are Megan Demshick, Dennis J. McGinley and Gerald “Jerry” Strubinger.

Voters in Jim Thorpe, Penn Forest Township and the South District of Kidder Township participate in the at-large voting for the district.

Weatherly Area School Board

There is also no race for positions on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education, where four four-year terms are to be decided.

There are only four candidates, including Barbara Sipler and Ryan P. Binder, who appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, and Republican candidates Nancy Mulvaney and Gerard Grega.

Grega is also the only one seeking the two-year term on the board that is up for grabs. He is on the Republican ballot.

Voters in East Side and Weatherly boroughs and Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer Township, as well as those in Kidder Township’s North District, participate in the at-large voting in the district.

Hazleton Area School Board

Voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows will participate in the balloting for four four-year terms on the Hazleton Area School District Board of Education.

There is a race in this balloting as there are five candidates, including Carmella Yenkevich, Patricia Tomsho and Ed Shemansky, who appear on both ballots, Democrat Wister Yuhas and Republican Jared M. O’Donnell.

Tamaqua School Board

There are no contests for four four-year terms on the Tamaqua Area School District Board of Education this time around as there are four candidates for the positions. They are Nancy Jones, Bryan Miller and Curtis H. Hartung, who will appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, and Nicholas Boyle, who is a Republican candidate.

Voters in Tamaqua Borough and Rush, Schuylkill, Walker and West Penn townships participate in the at-large balloting in the district.

Mahanoy Area School Board

Voters in Delano and Ryan townships participate in the at-large balloting in the Mahanoy Area School District.

Unchallenged candidates for four four-year terms on the district’s board of education are Steven J. Gnall, Jim Mitchell, John Honus and Karen Yedsena. They all appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

Pleasant Valley School Board

Five candidates are running for four spots. They are Diane Serfass, Denise Hopely, Norman A Burger, Janet Dooner, and Melanie Zipp.
