The second David’s Annual Kids’ Coat Drive will kick off in Lansford on Monday.
Donations of both boys’ and girls’ winter coats and jackets in sizes small, medium and large, and junior sizes and some adult sizes, are needed, said Gabrielle Crothers, who organized the drive in memory of her son, David, who died in June 2014.
She said that David, at age 9, came home without his coat, and when she asked what happened, he told her that he gave his coat to another child who was being bullied on a bitter cold morning.
His act of kindness inspired this coat drive, Crothers said.
Donations, including hats, scarves and gloves, for area youngsters will be accepted starting Monday through the end of November. People should contact Crothers at 717-250-3244 for a donation drop-off or more information.
Distribution will be in November at the East Bertsch Street bus stop in front of the Lansford Midrise. More details will be announced.
Crothers said the drive already received a $200 donation from a midrise resident, which will allow her to purchase warm jackets for children in need in the community.
She hopes that she can obtain a match for the donation, possibly from Walmart, to make the most of the funds and ensure as many youngsters as possible stay warm this winter.
“With no food stamps in November, these families are going to definitely be struggling,” Crothers said, referring to the government shutdown that will impact SNAP benefits in the Pennsylvania.
