Carbon opens bid to raze Lansford house

Lansford residents may soon see a dangerous five-story house that has caused road closures come down.

Last week the Carbon County Board of Commissioners opened the sole bid for the 151-151½ W. Ridge St. demolition project.

The bid was received from Northeast Industrial Services of Shamokin. The company bid $68,724.50 to take down the structure.

The bid was then tabled for review by the county planning and development department until the next commissioners meeting on Nov. 6, when they will either award or reject the bid.

Carbon County is overseeing the demolition contract because Lansford is using Community Development Block Grant funds it received in 2023. The bid came in below the amount of the funds earmarked for the project.

Lansford has been dealing with the house for two years, when the large double home began buckling and threatening to fall onto West Snyder Avenue below it.

At that time, Lansford closed a portion of West Snyder Avenue after the building began buckling.

During Lansford Borough Council’s meeting this past April, the board authorizing ARRO Engineering to prepare the bid specifications. Residents also questioned why the borough was using taxpayer money in the form of grants instead of citing the owner of the condemned structure.

Council President Bruce Markovich at that time said the new owner of half of the property finally agreed to allow for the entire building to be demolished.

No time frame has been announced for when demolition would begin after the contract is awarded.
