Police file charges in E. Penn burglary that involved death

Two people face burglary, criminal trespass and related charges following the death of a co-conspirator in January.

State police charged Bryan H. Jones, 60, of Palmerton, and Marissa Depriest, 31, of Lehighton, with burglary, criminal trespass, criminal use of a communication facility, theft, receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence.

Also charged was third person, Scott Hontz, 57, of Palmerton. He faces charges of criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and tampering with physical evidence.

Jones remains incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $45,000 bail, while Depriest and Hontz are free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

According to court papers, state police responded to 574 Riverview Road in East Penn Township on Jan. 20 for a report of a deceased man on the property.

Depriest told troopers that she dropped Alberto Amorim at the property and then was unable to reach him on his cellphone.

She contacted Jones to help locate Amorim and met Jones and Hontz at the Riverview Road property. They found Amorim deceased inside a motorhome on the property, court papers said.

Depriest told police that Jones and Amorim had been going to the property to steal scrap metal, and they had been texting each other in the days leading up to the incident about stealing items.

Troopers who responded noted that the deceased man had a duffel bag with tools used for removing copper wiring but did not have his cellular phone on him.

When interviewed by troopers, Jones told them that he told Depriest to dispose of Amorim’s phone, because of the incriminating text messages he had sent, court papers said. Troopers seized Jones’ cellphone following the interview due to the messages between him and the deceased, as well as those between him and Depriest.

Depriest told troopers that either Jones or Hontz took Amorim’s phone while she walked to her car, and later Jones had the phone in her car.

Hontz told police that he didn’t know about what happened to Amorim’s phone, and guessed that Depriest or Jones took it, but he didn’t see either take the phone. Hontz did hear the pair talking about Amorim’s phone, court papers said.

Depriest told police that Jones had Amorim’s phone and left it inside her car. She said that she didn’t know what to do with it, so she placed it under the passenger seat, court papers said.

Depriest allowed troopers to search her vehicle, and they recovered the phone.

Troopers then obtained search warrants for a forensic examination and data extraction for both phones.

Troopers found messages between Jones and the Amorim about stealing items from Riverview Road property and photographs related to the theft of scrap metal.

They also obtained records from Great Metal Recycling showing Jones scrapped copper and other metals between December 2024 and Jan. 15, 2025.
