LVHN Health Tips: 5 tips for a better mammogram
We know mammograms don’t top your list of favorite things to do. But they’re the key to early detection and it’s so important to have one each year. Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), part of Jefferson Health, is making them easier to get.
Our state-of-the-art breast health services include simple, comfortable screenings so there’s no reason to put them off.
When you schedule your appointment, these tips can make your experience better:
Choose the right place
LVHN has more than 20 breast health services locations.
Our centers are equipped for screening and diagnostic mammograms, using 3D technology, along with breast MRIs and automated breast ultrasound for evaluating dense breast tissue.
A team of breast imaging specialists are on board LVHN’s two mobile mammography coaches offer appointments throughout the region. Schedule here.
Bonus: Our locations offer paddles that follow your contour, so pressure is distributed across the entire breast for more comfortable screenings.
Choose the right time
To ease unnecessary discomfort, avoid scheduling your mammogram the week before and during your period, when your breasts are in their most tender state.
Pass on the deodorant
Wearing certain health and beauty products on the day of your mammogram can interfere with the mammogram reading.
So, skip deodorant, lotions, powders and cosmetics.
Eat, drink and be merry
It’s not necessary to avoid eating or drinking before your mammogram. You can also take prescribed medications as you normally would.
Have a medication list handy in case the clinician asks.
Share important information
Let your mammogram technologist know if you have experienced any breast changes or problems, have breast implants, have trouble standing, are breastfeeding and if you are or think you may be pregnant.
