Tamaqua to borrow $1.67M loan
Tamaqua is securing funding for its new police station and community center.
On Tuesday, borough council voted to adopt an ordinance that authorizes the borough to take out a $1.67 million tax-exempt loan from Peoples Security Bank and Trust Company.
The loan has a 20-year term and comes with a 4.39% fixed interest rate.
It was the lowest bid of four received by the borough, and will be used to fund portions of the $4.4 million project that will not be covered by grants.
Council members voted unanimously to adopt the loan ordinance.
The expected settlement date is Nov. 5.
Plans are to convert the former Moose building, 133 E. Broad St., into a new police headquarters. Renovations will also include a community center and offices for the district magistrate.
A three-story addition is planned for the rear of the building.
The borough received a $2 million grant from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.
In June, council awarded a contract for the work to Uhrig Construction of Reading.
The Tamaqua Area Community Partnership purchased the vacant building in 2022, and later bought adjoining parcels on East Mauch Chunk and Pine streets. Buildings on the adjoining properties were demolished to make way for a parking lot.
Once the renovations are complete, the partnership will turn the building over to the borough.
The police department currently shares space at borough hall, however, the site hasn’t been updated in decades.
