Indians face BM
There are games throughout the season that can launch a team on a successful path.
Both Lehighton (3-3) and Blue Mountain (3-3) will be looking for just that — a win that could help them blast off into the remainder of the season — as the Indians head to the road to take on the Eagles in the Week 7 Times News Game of the Week.
Lehighton and Blue Mountain are both coming off impressive wins in week 6.
The Indians looked good in a 35-0 victory over Pottsville.
It was the one-two punch of Lukas Croizier and Jayse Lawrence that got the Tribe going in the run game against the Crimson Tide.
Croizer led the way last week with 143 yards on 22 carries, while Lawrence added 84 yards on seven attempts. Lawrence was also very efficient in the passing game, going 13-for-16 for 148 yards and three passing scores.
“We have to be very sound on our scheme up front. They have a defense that is big and physical and fast,” said Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll. “In five out of our six games this season, we really liked the way we’ve moved the ball. We were able to run the ball, and we have been sound with the things that we like to do.
“We must account for their three down lineman who are really good, and they have a linebacker in Miller who is just a dude. But we feel good. We think we can find some advantages; we just need to execute and control what we can control.”
Blue Mountain jumped all over a good Palisades team last week, leading 42-7 at the half on its way to a 42-21 win.
The run game was impressive for the Eagles, with Carter Smith rushing for 165 yards. As a team, Blue Mountain ran for 235 yards and four touchdowns.
Quarterback Cohen Kirby also had a nice night, throwing for 177 yards and two scores on big plays — 50- and 60-yard connections — to Josh Hoover.
“They’re a well-rounded offense with speed on the outside, but they’re still a run-first team. The focus for us is to try and win the battle along the line of scrimmage and limit their success in the run game,” said McCarroll.
“We need to make them throw the ball more than they want to or they’re used to. We have to try and keep them off schedule.”
It’s been a little bit of a roller coaster type season for the Indians.
They suffered a tough loss to Northern Lehigh in Week 1, followed by a 38-7 win over Bangor, then a 21-20 loss to the No. 1 team in the state in 4A in Southern Lehigh, a 35-0 win over rival Palmerton, a 50-0 loss to Northwestern Lehigh, and then the shutout win over Pottsville last week.
When the Indians have played clean football, and have not turned the ball over, they have been in every game.
But on the flip side, it’s been turnovers that has cost them in losses. The same could also be said with Blue Mountain, which has also had its own turnover issues as well this season.
“Turnovers have been the difference for us,” said McCarroll. “When we take care of the ball, we have been really good. The turnover battle could certainly be the difference in this game.
“They have shown their inexperience at some positions at time, and they have had some costly turnovers as well in their losses. It’s not an accident that at all three levels you hear coaches talk about the importance of not turning over the football.”
