Hazleton shooting victim was a Panther graduate

The woman killed in a shooting incident Saturday after 5 p.m. at the Hilltop Apartments, Hazleton, was a 2009 graduate of Panther Valley High School.

Vanessa Bigg-Carr, 34, was found dead at the scene when police from the City of Hazleton arrived there. Police said she was shot by Miguel Lara, who later was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his apartment.

A third victim, identified as Patrick Heast, was initially transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton, and then transferred to another hospital due to the extent of his injuries. He is reportedly in critical condition.

City police released the identities of the victims yesterday.

A published report in the Standard Speaker states Bigg-Carr lived in an upstairs apartment at Hillside while Lara lived in a ground floor unit.

In an obituary published on the website of the Joseph S. Blazosky Funeral Home, Nesquehoning, it states Bigg-Carr was a behavioral health technician at Clearvision Health and Wellness, Hazleton.

Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, she was a daughter of Christina (Carr) Castillo of Laurys Station and Shawn Bigg of New Jersey.

She was the mother of Dustin Allen Sorentino Jr., Savannah Isabella Sorrentino and Sophia Ann Sorrentino, and the sister of Amber, wife of Rayn Chicarella, Ashley Nilsen and Kylie Bigg. She was the paternal granddaughter of Gary and Denise Bigg.

Vanessa’s twin sister, Felicia M. Bigg-Carr died on Feb. 28, 2024.
