Pleasant Valley board hears update on renovation project

The Pleasant Valley School Board held only a workshop meeting on Thursday night, instead of both regular and workshop meetings.

The workshop sessions are where members discuss various topics, but do not vote on anything.

At the meeting, Mike Sander, a senior project manager for CHA Consulting Inc., gave a presentation on the renovations and additions project at the high school.

“We’re still working diligently to get things done,” he said.

As shown in the presentation, the project is moving into Phase 2, which includes three subphases referred to as A, B and C. Part of the 2C phase will be completed in Phase 4C.

The interior finishes to the choral/band areas, classrooms, senior corridor and library have been completed, Sander said.

Workers also have completed the installation of the mechanical systems above the ceiling. They include power hydronic piping, ductwork and domestic piping in Phase 2 areas, and the new fire alarm system and the existing fire alarm system are now operating in tandem.

Sander said crews are working on new ductwork in the second floor, and electrical systems are being roughed in for future HVAC, power and lights.

“So that’s where the guys are in the current science room,” he said. “That’ll keep going on until about Christmastime frame.”

Crews also have completed demolition of interior walls, removed low voltage systems and structural components in the existing cafeteria, and installed interior masonry wall partitions for future bathrooms.

On the exterior, Sander said, “The admin. addition suite is really defined now.” Referring to a picture in the presentation, he said, “That last remaining bit of stone there, that was poured concrete this morning, so we have all slab on-grade completed as of today.”

As soon as the steel beams arrive, construction on the administration addition will begin.

“So within the next time I get to talk with you, I should have some pretty cool photos of that actually taking shape,” Sander said.

There also has been plenty of demolition activity and preparation work behind the school.

“The future mechanical and kitchen spaces are underway,” Sander said.

Crews are also working to wrap up the expansion parking lot in the front of the building, Sander said.

School board director Norman Burger asked if the project is on time or ahead of scheduled.

“We’re on track right now. We’re progressing well,” Sander said.

“We’re not ahead?” Burger asked.

“I would not commit that we are. We’re right where we need to be. The goal is we’re going to get closed before wintertime, which allows a lot of activity,” Sander said regarding the administration addition.

Burger said he wants to make sure that the project doesn’t get behind if something comes up during the school year from the school district’s side.

Sander reassured the board that crews are working on pace and have not slowed since school started.

“Every six months, we turn another part over to you,” he said.

Director Diane Serfass asked how they are doing on supplies and deliveries. She wanted to know if there is anything they are not able to get.

“All the long lead items, we have on track right now, so we’re in good shape,” Sander said. “Everyone’s been very proactive on that. They’re trying to grab things as fast as they can.”

Sander explained that since they have a large staging area, they have been able to stock up on supplies.

Burger asked when the bus drivers’ parking lot is going to be completed.

“We’re ramping that schedule up as fast as we can,” Sander said. “I’m thinking we’re just a couple weeks out.”

As for costs, the presentation listed how much the school district has paid so far and the amount of each contract. It stated that Lobar Inc., the general contractor, has been paid $5,007,139 of its $38,404,428 contract.

Myco Mechanical Inc., the mechanical contractor, has been paid $4,132,876 of its $13,894,000 contract. Myco is the plumbing contractor, too, and has been paid $1,602,642 of its $5,551,000 plumbing contract.

Wind Gap Electric Inc. has been paid $3,366,354 and has a contract for $14,288,370. And Sargeant Enterprises Inc., the environmental contractor, has been paid $153,742 of its $576,324 contract.
