Mahoning approves police radios

Mahoning Township supervisors approved an agreement for P25 Radio for police Wednesday night.

The report was prepared by Carbon County as part of an upgrade to a digital radio system for emergency services.

“The county procured funding to purchase digital radios to upgrade for police, fire, and EMS,” explained Mahoning Township Chief of Police Audie Mertz.

“That’s our agreement so we can get the radios installed in our vehicles,” he said.

The county is paying for the radios with grant money, so there will be no cost to Mahoning Township.

Road crew truck radios are not included in the grant. The cost of those types of radios is more than $6,000.

The supervisors approved Mertz to sign the agreement.

In other business, supervisors:

• Approved the Community Development Plan and activities submitted for the inclusion in the Community Development Block Grant application FY2025 through grantee Carbon County Board of Commissioners, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

• Approved the Mahoning Township Fire Police to assist at the Lehighton Halloween Parade at 4 p.m. on Oct. 18.

• A motion to pass an ordinance to form the Mahoning Township Historical Society was tabled after some discussion that some of the terms of having a property officially listed as historic might prove too stringent for property owners. Supervisors will look closer at the terms and discuss at a later date.
